Editor's note: The 1950s was a decade in which numerous science fiction films were made, mainly of the 'monster' theme. The Tatler was a news theatre, one which only ran newsreels, cartoons and serials. The Morgue was the famous cellar club, opened for a short time by Al Caldwell, soon to be known as Rory Storm. He is the Al referred to thoughout. The Paul referred to is Paul Murphy, a fellow musician, who was later to become a recording manager in Hamburg. Martins refers to Billy Martins in the Old Swan district, a dance club. The Liverpool Show was an annual event which took place in the 'Mystery', a park in Wavertree. Spud is Spud Ward, bass player with the Raving Texans. When he refers to articles in the Express, Johnny means a local paper, the Evening Express.
His reference to 'drainies' meant a pair of 'drainpipe'
trousers. When he wrote to 'Luxembourg', this was Radio Luxembourg, which played popular music. Burtonwood was an American air base outside Liverpool where American clothes could be bought - also American records. His reference to 'University' meant dances at Liverpool University.
