5. Had to walk to camp as missed one-hourly bus. Played first time at 8 and 11. Played in grey suits, looked good, got photographs taken.

(Diary discontinued as no time to write).

September
1 Butlin's: Had a smashing season in the five weeks we had. Our own show at the Gaity Theatre. The Happy Wanderers were on with us...(can't read something). Mal waited outside Rock 'n' Calypso but security got him away. Mal tried to throw him in swimming pool.

Met some nice girls. I went with Sandy (controller's daughter) and Yvonne (ice cream girl). I used to go back to Les' every night. We went home to Liverpool a few times, one time Ringo and I were two hours late getting back. We finished Sat 3rd.

4. Came home from Butlin's. Stayed home about a week.

11. Went down to London for week, not too bad, but very expensive.

18. Came back from London and started playing at Ormskirk, Jive Hive.

24. Sandy came down, went to dance in Ormskirk, all my ex-girls came up, it was pretty awkward for me. We went down very well.

25. Eileen came down to ours, but I went to Chester with Pat and his girl.

26. Went with Sandy to bus station, then went to Burnley to see Yvonne, went to her house, then went to dance.

28. Went to St. Luke's, then to Cavern. Saw Eileen but she wouldn't bother with me. Got band jackets from C&A.

29. Got train from Lime Street, missed the other three, caught up with them on the boat train.

30. Arrived Holland about 6 o clock, caught the 7 o clock Hamburg Express. Arrived in Hamburg about 5. Derry and the Seniors were there, also Beatles. We had to sleep rough.

October
1. Kaiserkeller. Started work. We played 6 hours and finished at 6 in the morning. It was hard work. We slept like logs.

2. Had to get up and start playing again. We finished at five in the morning.

3. We only played 4 1/2 hours. There was a talent contest. It was a farce, we couldn't understand what people were singing.

4. Indra closed down, Beatles move in with us. Rory, Ritchie and I staying at hotels, good one.

No entries until...

8. (Sat) Started 7.30, finished at 5. We went for a meal, then Rory and I went to F......... with Carl, very big place.

9. We started at 3, finished at 3.

10. Willy called us in, wanted us to sign extension contract, we refused. We get more money, sent 80 marks home.

12. Alan Williams, manager from Jacaranda, came. Then Beatles signed their contract so I doubt if we'll get any more cash.

13. Willy got mad with Rory for not being on stage. I've written about six letters, got one from Yvonne.

14. Wally and Beatles going to make a test recording tomorrow.

(Sadly no more entries until a note at the end of December): going home in two weeks as Eileen very ill. I realized I loved her awfully.
