Here is another sample of ‘The Mersey Boys column:

THE MERSEY BOYS
3 September 1964

THE MERSEY BEATS
Dates for THE MERSEYBEATS in Italy have included a lot of cabaret work and open-air concerts. The concerts have been performed on stages which have been built on beaches.

Unfortunately, three of their five open-air dates had to be cancelled because of freak storms which caused rough seas to damage the stages.

However, we hear that the weather is now nice and sunny – and the boys are rehearsing in their bathing trunks.

THE HIDEAWAYS
Tonight (Thursday) is to be a busy one for THE HIDEAWAYS. They are playing a a barbeque at Windle Hall, near St. Helens, the home of Lady Pilkington, and then have to dash back to Liverpool to appear on the same bill as American blues star MEMPHIS SLIM at the Cavern.

THE KUBAS
Next Tuesday another programme in Radio Luxembourg’s ‘Sunday Night At The Cavern’ series will be recorded at the club. Taking part will be THE KUBAS, HERMAN’S HERMITS, DENNY SEYTON & THE SABRES and MARK PETERS & THE SILHOUETTES. The Kubas have just returned from a short tour of Scotland.

THE ‘TAKERS
Appearing on ‘Ready, Steady, Go!’ tomorrow night will be THE ‘TAKERS, or THE UNDERTAKERS as they were until recently. The boys, who changed their name a week or two ago, will feature their current disc ‘If You Don’t Come Back’ on the programme and they can also be seen on ‘Lucky Stars Summer Spin’ on Saturday September 19. They will telerecord their spot for the show before leaving for a week’s residency at the Star Palace, Kiel, Germany, where they will be from September 14 to 20.

THE PAWNS
THE PAWNS tell us that they will be appearing at the Star Palace, Kiel, for two months commencing October 1. “We would like to stay in Germany longer, preferably for 12 months,” they said. “In Germany we could find a different sound – as there are far too many groups in Britain and most of them sound the same. We are looking for a big sound and would like another saxophonist in addition to HOWIE CASEY.”

The group set off for London to audition for 12 agents for German bookings recently, but had a break-down and returned to Liverpool.

THE MERSEY MONSTERS
New addition to THE MERSEY MONSTERS is NIVLEK, who replaces MORFO on bass guitar. Due to the change in personnel, which occurred two weeks ago, their recording date has been postponed.

The group will be turning professional when they commence a tour of Scotland in October.

Monsters’ manager TONY REUBEN tells us that he is looking for another group to sign up. “I’m looking for a group who are unusual and different, he tells us, “and I’d like them to go on tour with THE MONSTERS. If they are good enough I will also secure a recording contract for them.”
